Stephen Foster has exceptional experience of groundwater assessment, management and protection in a wide variety of contexts and applications worldwide – from his native Britain to Argentina, Barbados, Bermuda, Bolivia, Botswana, Brasil, China, Costa Rica, India, Malawi, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Spain, Sri Lanka & Thailand, His senior posts include : World Health Organisation–Groundwater Adviser for Latin America & Caribbean (1986-89), British Geological Survey–Divisional Director (1991-99) and World Bank–GW.MATe Director (2000-11), a major programme to promote local groundwater management globally.

He was voted International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) – Vice President for Western Europe (2000-04) and President (2004-08) (www.iah.org) was a co-founder of the UK Groundwater Forum (a national cross-sector platform for policy dialogue),was a member of the EC-Groundwater Working Group (2000-08) and of the GEF Groundwater Governance Programme-Core Drafting Team (2013-15) and has been a Global Water Partnership–Senior Adviser (www.gwp.org) since 2011 publishing on trans-sectoral aspects of groundwater management.

Academically he received a D Sc (London) in 1983 for published work and in 1993 was appointed to a University of London–Visiting Professorship (www.ucl.ac.uk) and named a Spanish Real Academia de Ciencias–Foreign Member. He has published over 200 papers, articles and books, with particular focus on the topics highlighted, and has received awards from British, American and international professional societies – including the UK Institution of Water & Environmental Management-Whitaker Medal 1975 (for an outstanding paper), the IAH-Presidents Award 2004 (for a leading contribution to understanding groundwater) and the Geological Society of London-William Smith Medal 2006 (for career contributions to applied geoscience).
